Surgical Gastroenterology pertains to diseases afflicting the Digestive system. Organ systems involved include the Liver, Bile ducts, Gallbladder, Pancreas and the Luminal digestive system (Esophagus, Stomach, duodenum, small and large intestine, colon and rectum).

Hepatobiliary pancreatic (HPB) surgery is a subspecialty of Surgical Gastroenterology that deals with the liver, bile ducts and pancreas.

Liver transplantation is another subspecialty that deals with liver failure either due to Cirrhosis and Chronic liver disease or Acute liver failure.

Oncology including tumors or cancers affecting any of the above systems is an inherent component of the Surgical Gastroenterology and constitutes approximately 70% of surgeries performed in this field. Combined/Multimodality therapy is the key in cancer treatment wherein the surgeon is part of a team comprising medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, and interventional radiologist at various stages of diagnosis, decision making, treatment and follow up.

Common diseases involving these systems that may require surgical consultation treatment include :
  1. Stones in the gallbladder, liver, bile ducts or pancreas.

  2. Cysts of the liver, bile ducts or pancreas (congenital, inflammatory, parasitic, cystic tumors)

  3. Inflammation/ Infections of the liver, gall bladder, bile ducts, pancreas or intestine (Liver abcess, cholangitis, infected pancreatic necrosis/pancreatic abcess, chronic pancreatitis, ulcerative colitis, Crohns disease)

  4. Benign Tumors or Malignant Cancers affecting any of the the above systems
