Hepatobiliary pancreatic (HPB) surgery is a subspecialty of Surgical Gastroenterology that deals with the liver, bile ducts and pancreas.
Liver transplantation is another subspecialty that deals with liver failure either due to Cirrhosis and Chronic liver disease or Acute liver failure.
Oncology including tumors or cancers affecting any of the above systems is an inherent component of the Surgical Gastroenterology and constitutes approximately 70% of surgeries performed in this field. Combined/Multimodality therapy is the key in cancer treatment wherein the surgeon is part of a team comprising medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, and interventional radiologist at various stages of diagnosis, decision making, treatment and follow up.
